Art Alive at Bird Rock Elementary

Sundial 2

Artists Jane Wheeler and Kathryn Stephens have teamed up with the 5th grade class at Bird Rock Elementary, to help design, create and install the 5th grade gift to the school –The Sundial Project – titled “Radiate Creativity Through You”. They worked with the students to stamp their names in clay and create fused glass pieces for the rim of the mixed media mosaic 4 ft diameter sundial. Phase 2 of the project is a human sundial painted on the ground , so students can tell time with their shadow.!!

The mosaic features 3 haiku sundial poems created by each of the 5th grade classes - circling the phases of the moon. The art incorporates hand made and hand painted high fire ceramic tiles, Italian smalti glass, mirror tiles, sea glass, a stained glass peace sign created by a New York Artist, and fused glass created by the students along with their names stamped in clay. Kathryn and Jane are alumni parents from Bird Rock Elementary and are back 5 years later, commissioned to help with this the class of 2010’s gift to the school. Art comes full circle, and they have had a blast working on the project together .They had previously worked on the 5th grade project for their children in 2005 along with artist Marlena Poulin, to produce the starfish bench.
