At low tide on Saturday October 15, 2011 the La Jolla High School Interact Club & Bird Rock Artist Guild  created a temporary Labyrinth walking path at Law St. Beach. Members of the community young and old came to  experience this ancient spiral designed walking path & temporary art experience. At sunset they light the path with 300 lumenaria candle bags! Located in the center of the Labyrinth was a no-obligation donation jar of giving to collect for Interact’s fall service project “Project Mercy”– building a home in Mexico for an impoverished family. Interact is an action-oriented community service club of La Jolla High School.  The club is tied to the La Jolla Rotary and fosters ambitious volunteerism as well as active leadership development. They will use the donations to purchase building materials.

Before sunset, Interact members Kaitlin Wheeler and Maddie Bollinger drew an enormous  25ft sand picture of the “Apple” logo  at the beach as a tribute to Steve Jobs – Creative Genius, Visionary and Pioneer. People  were invited to participate and draw their words of tribute to him in the sand…some of the tributes were ” you will be missed”, “ we all love Steve Jobs”, “you were a genius Steve”, and more.

On the other side of the labyrinth, LJHS  Seniors Kevin Riley, Tom Wheeler, & Ryan Mann created a 35 ft . giant lettering message in the sand containing the numbers  “350” ,  an artistic expression to help build awareness for reducing the  global carbon footprint. 350.org is a grass roots global movement to help solve the climate crisis and parent organization of moving-planet.org a global  movement that promotes alternative modes of transportation like riding your bike, walking,& skating to reduce emissions. Ryan Mann, Senior at LJHS  just organized the first in a series of bike rides for awareness  on Sept 24 with LJHS students and the Interact club. This year the senior t-shirt for the class of 2012 states ”The world’s  not ending ……we’re just taking over”.  These teenagers are full of big ideas and  are prepared to take on the next big solutions.

Mark your calendar for Jan 1, 2012 for the annual New Years labyrinth at low tide on Law St. beach. Come write your new years resolution in the sand!

Seaside at Sunset

At low tide on Saturday, walkers make their way around a temporary labyrinth walking path at Law Street Beach created by the La Jolla High School Interact Club and members of Bird Rock Artist Guild. They lit luminaria bags around the path made in the ancient spiral design as part of a temporary art experience. In the center was a donation jar for Interact’s spring project – building a home in Mexico for an impoverished family. Interact is affiliated with La Jolla Rotary.

At sunset on Saturday Oct. 9^th, the La Jolla High School Interact Club & members of Bird Rock Artist Guild, created a temporary Labyrinth walking path at Law St. Beach. Families and friends came to experience this ancient spiral designed walking path, & temporary art experience lit by luminaria candles at night.

Located in the center of the Labyrinth was a no-obligation donation “jar of giving” to collect for Interact’s fall project – building 2 homes in Mexico for families that have no home. Interact Club is the largest and most active community service club at La Jolla High School. The club is sponsored by and guided by La Jolla Rotary Club. Interact is well-known for taking action and working hard to improve the lives of those who are less fortunate. From home-building in Tijuana's poorest neighborhood to tutoring preschoolers to collecting food donations, this club is all about making a positive difference in the world while learning AND having fun!
